What does it really mean when a job is exposed to artificial intelligence?
Exposure indexes help identify where work may change. The error begins when we turn them into an individual prediction.
Exposure does not mean replacement.
The ILO estimates that one in four workers worldwide is in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. That figure describes where tasks may change; it is not a person’s probability of losing a job.
The same analysis says transformation is more likely than complete replacement because many occupations still require human input. Exposure signals potential change, not a predetermined outcome.
A job is a mix of tasks.
A role combines analysis, coordination, communication, decisions, physical work and contextual knowledge. Technology may affect each part differently.
Even people with the same title may perform different task mixes across sectors, organizations, tools and markets. A title alone is therefore an incomplete unit of analysis.
What may change within a job.
Some tasks may be automated; others may be augmented by new tools. Judgment, oversight, human relationships or specialist knowledge that complements technology may become more important.
New verification, integration and control tasks may emerge. These categories help investigate change but do not deterministically classify every role.
What an index cannot tell you.
The ILO cautions that indicators vary by methodology and exposure alone does not equal job loss. They also cannot fully capture adoption speed, company choices, regulation or local conditions.
A global index cannot determine what will happen to one person. It is useful for forming better questions and seeking evidence in the real market.
More useful questions than ‘will my profession disappear?’
A decision improves when a binary prediction is replaced with observable questions.

- Which are already changing?
- Which capabilities transfer?
- What market evidence exists?
- What can I test cheaply?
